Cultural Diversity Training: Islamic Cultural Awareness Course

Introduction

Muslims are part of the mosaic of British society. However, Islam is still one of the world's most misunderstood religions. Many Muslims wear visible signs of their faith, which can lead to the perpetuation of stereotypes and myths. Often, the mainstream public do not have the opportunity to speak to a learned Muslim, ask the questions they want or develop a deeper understanding of the faith which one fifth of humanity adheres to.

How would I or my organisation benefit from attending this course?

Inclusion: This course will give you an overview of Muslim belief and practice within a relevant framework of wider British society and the workplace. It will also provide you with an open and friendly forum to ask all your questions. We adopt a “hands-on” approach which will provide you the opportunity to visit a mosque, and witness one of the five congregational prayers as it is offered. The course should equip you with the tools to create a more inclusive environment back in the workplace, or to cater for your Muslim customers better. Legislation: Information provided on this course should allow you to formulate policy and enact decisions in compliance with relevant legislative requirements: e.g. Equality Impact Assessments (EQIA) requirements as part of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 and The Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003. Through prior consultation, we are able to tailor our courses to meet specific needs you may have.

Who would benefit from the course?
Course Preparation

We can provide some pre-course reading material to give you a grounding in the key concepts to be covered, and also to give you time to formulate questions beforehand. As the course will be mosque-based, participants will be required to remove their footwear before entering the prayer hall (shoe racks are provided). We would also request participants to dress modestly, with long skirts or trousers, out of respect for the mosque as a place of worship.
